A Storm Lake woman… arrested in January after Storm Lake police investigated an incident at a local apartment… has been sentenced.
Police located 35-year-old Charlene Smith of Storm Lake, lying on the floor semi-conscious… with heavy damage and blood throughout the apartment. Police learned Smith allegedly became angry with 22-year-old Shawn Rowell of Storm Lake and began smashing property with a softball bat and her hands. Rowell had left, then returned, forcing himself in the apartment… and a physical confrontation escalated, injuring both.
Smith was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, willful injury, going armed with intent, and assault while participating in a felony, all class “D” felonies. She pleaded guilty to the reduced charges of third-degree criminal mischief, an aggravated misdemeanor… and assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor. She was sentenced to 30 days time served… to submit a DNA sample… to pay 32-hundred dollars restitution… and to pay 650-dollars in fines, surcharges, and court costs.
In April, Rowell pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal mischief and assault causing injury, and was sentenced to two years in prison. He was already serving a two-year sentence for assault with intent to commit sexual abuse.
