Newell Fire Cause Under Investigation

The state fire marshal’s office arrived in Newell Wednesday afternoon to begin investigating the cause of the fire that destroyed three buildings.

The fire was reported about 6:30 Wednesday morning in the buildings north of the Newell Post Office on the east side of SouthFulton Street. The Newell Fire Department responded and called several area departments in for assistance. Crews were on the scene throughout the morning, getting the fire contained and preventing it from spreading to adjoining buildings. They continued monitoring the area Wednesday afternoon for hot spots.

The structures are considered a total loss… and once the fire was out, the some of the walls were knocked down so fire officials could gain access. The post office received some smoke and water damage.

No injuries were reported in fighting the fire. The buildings previously housed a hardware store and some apartments. They no longer were used and were in the process of being sold.

Assistance was received from fire departments in Storm Lake, Alta, Fonda, Sioux Rapids, Marathon, Rembrandt, Nemaha, Albert City, and Early, with other emergency responders on scene. Water was tanked in from other communities and Storm Lake’s aerial truck was used in fighting the fire.
