The Storm Lake football team scored 28 points off four Cherokee turnover’s and the Tornadoe’s beat the Braves 49-7 in the season opener for both teams. Brayden Hoops intercepted a pass early in the game and two plays later Kevin Duque ran for a 13 yard touchdown, the point after was blocked and it was 6-0 Tornadoes. Kevin Duque then ran a pick six back 38 yards for and followed it with a two-point conversion pass to Hoops and it was 14-0 midway through the first quarter.
Early in the 2nd quarter Duque came up with his second interception of the game setting up the Tornadoes at the Braves 20 yard line and two plays later Hoops would run it in from 20 yards out. Gerardo Rosiles would kick the point after and it was 21-0. Late in the first half the Tornadoes put together their longest scoring drive of the game (79 yards) capped off by Lamar Mulgae’s 4 yard run and it was 28-0 at the half.
The Braves only score came after a high punt snap was recovered by Rosiles at the Storm Lake one yard line. On the next play Tyler Zeiman ran it in and the score was 28-7 with under four minutes to play in the 3rd quarter.
Storm Lake would then add three more touchdowns, Hoops a one yard TD run, Xeng Vang had a 20 yard touchdown run, and Jake Heitman added a 21 yard TD run.
Storm Lake had 227 yards of offense with 201 on the ground led by Hoops with 68 yards on ten carries plus two rushing touchdowns, couple that with his defense and he was named the Wells Ag Supply player of the game.
The Tornado defense was impressive with more than ten tackles for loss and limited the Braves to 48 yards of total offense. Storm Lake was plus three in the turnover ratio.
