Pencil collectors from around the country will be in Sioux Center this weekend, for the 2017 National American Pencil Collectors Society convention.
Ron Brink of Orange City is a thirty-year collector, and he volunteered to host the convention. Pencil collectors from all around the United States will be gathering at the All Seasons Center in Sioux Center Friday and Saturday. The convention is open to the public to view hundreds of thousands of utensils and to buy from the collectors.
This is the first time the national convention has been held in Iowa. Brink says his collection started around 30 years ago when he received his first pencil in a circular shape. Brink now owns about 27-thousand pencils. Brink says it’s just something that you get interested in, and it isn’t a high-priced hobby.
The society started in 1955. By 1958, the society had 191 members, and in 1963, Culver Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, hosted the first convention.
