Pocahontas Area/Laurens Marathon was dealt some adversity, but a 12-2 edge in the 4th quarter helped them to a 68-55 win over Roland Story Wednesday night in a 3A girls basketball region semifinal in Pocahontas.
Roland Story’s only lead was 10-8 in the middle of the opening quarter, as PAC-LM took a 21-13 lead after the 1st quarter. An Elle Ruffridge four-point play with 2 seconds left in the half made it 43-30 at the break.
The Indians led by as many as 18 early in the 3rd, but an 18-4 run by Roland Story to close out the 3rd quarter, capped by a Jenna Clark three at the buzzer, cut the Poky led to 56-53. From there though, the Norse went cold, and the Indians scored seven straight to begin the 4th.
Ruffridge, the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game, led Poky with a game-high 33, including five of the team’s ten threes, and went 12 for 12 at the free throw line. Faith Meyer had 13, and Payton Hjerleid wound up with 10. The Norse hit nine threes on the night.
Roland Story’s season ends at 15-8. 2nd ranked PAC-LM is now 23-1, and they advance to Saturday’s region final to play Carroll Kuemper at 7pm in Manson. That game will be broadcast on Mix 101.7FM KAYL. Kuemper advanced with a 68-38 win over Gilbert.
