The body of a teenager who had been missing for more than a week was recovered Thursday afternoon in a western Iowa river.
According to Crawford County Sheriff Jim Steinkuehler, the remains of 15 year old Yoana Acosta have been recovered. Multiple organizations assisted in locating the body which was found in the Boyer River near the Crawford County Fairgrounds in Denison. Acosta had been missing after she went into the water following a single vehicle accident more than a week ago.
Acosta was the only one of the five in the vehicle not accounted for when crews arrived. After the crash, emergency responders removed four people from the river. They were taken to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital for treatment for possible hypothermia. The week-long search for Acosta’s body required multiple dive and rescue personnel, with the search hampered by fog and winter weather.
The driver of the vehicle… 25-year-old Ramon Hernandez, of Denison was charged earlier this week with failure to maintain control, reckless driving and driving under a suspended license. Hernandez, who is Mexican citizen, also faces seven felony charges for the possession and distribution of drugs.
