On Sunday January 22, 2017, nine boys and girls from the Storm Lake area, ages 9 to 13, were named local champions of the 2017 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. They have earned the right to compete at the district level. St. Mary’s Council 2326 in Storm Lake sponsored the local competition at St. Mary’s High School gymnasium. All youngsters ages 9 to 14 were eligible to participate.
Nine-year-old champion was Peyton Phillips in the boys’ bracket. Hannah Taylor was the 10-year-old girl’s champion and Carson Lullmann was the winner of the 10-year old boys’ division. In the 11-year-olds bracket, Natalie Green was the girls’ champion and Carter Boettcher was the boys’ champion. Twelve-year-old winners in the girls’ and boys’ division were Karley Mills and Toby Jones. The 13-year-old girls’ division was won by Emily Nothwehr and the boys’ by Mason Laven. Each contestant was allowed 15 free throw attempts in the contests. Ties were settled by successive rounds of five free throws per contestant until a winner emerged.
Each of these winners will compete in the district competition to be held on Sunday February 12, 2017, at Newell-Fonda High School in Newell, Iowa. Each participant competes to move on to the state and international levels.
