Buena Vista County Engineer Bret Wilkinson calls Tuesday’s ice, followed by snow storm a “really tricky winter storm.”
He says secondary road crews were out well before 6:00 Tuesday morning… but there was “no way to really win that battle.” Wilkinson says no one expected conditions to turn to a sheet of ice so fast… and road were worse than a normal ice storm. He says cars were sliding off roads… and a county dump truck, with chains, slid into a ditch… which took several county vehicles to get it pulled out.
Secondary road workers couldn’t get material on the roads fast enough… and when the wind came up and the snow came, they had to deal with near white-out conditions. Wednesday morning, Wilkinson said roads are now in better shape than they were, and crews were back out Wednesday morning putting more material on roads. He noted gravel roads in the county were in better shape than paved roads.
