Josh Werge poured in 33 points in leading the Storm Lake boys basketball team to an 86-54 non-conference win Monday night over Ridge View in Schaller.
Werge scored 18 of Storm Lake’s 20 1st quarter points, helping the Tornadoes overcome an early seven point deficit to grab a three point lead after the opening quarter. Storm Lake led by 12 during the 2nd quarter, but the Raptors closed within 37-32 at the half on a Colton Wunschel buzzer-beating three.
Werge scored 15 more points in the 3rd quarter, as the Tornadoes led 67-41 going into the 4th.
Brayden Hoops chimed in with 12 off the bench, and Parker Lange had 11 for the Tornadoes, as they connected on 16 threes for the game, including eight by Werge. Storm Lake is now 7-3. Tyler Wingert led Ridge View with 14, and Colton Wunschel had 11, as the Raptors go to 4-6.
The Ridge View girls never trailed in their 43-31 victory over Storm Lake.
The Raptors were up 10-6 after the 1st quarter. The Tornadoes tied it at 10-10, but the Raptors followed with a 10-0 run, helping them to a 25-15 lead at halftime. Storm Lake got within 29-25 early in the 4th, but then a 9-0 Ridge View run put the game away.
Beth Pickhinke had 16 for the Raptors, while the Tornadoes were led by Briana Soto’s 10. Ridge View improves to 7-3, dropping Storm Lake to 1-11.
The Storm Lake teams will next play on Friday at home against Spirit Lake, which will be broadcast on Mix 101.7.
The Ridge View teams will turn right back around on Tuesday and go to Mapleton for games against MVAO. Those will be broadcast on Mix 101.7.
