Buena Vista University head men’s basketball coach Brian Van Haaften has been selected to serve as head coach for a USA Division III All-Star team that will take its talents on a Brazil Tour from July 19-28.
Van Haaften will have a few familiar faces on his roster when the team begins its tour on the 19th with team orientation and practices. Soon-to-be BVU senior Kennedy Drey is among the 10-player roster as is 2016 BVU graduate Nick Clark. The duo is among three individuals from the Iowa Conference on the team (Marshall Shedeck, Coe College).
The team will all come together in Orlando, Fla., on July 19th before departing for Sao Paulo, Brazil on July 20. It will play a pair of doubleheaders in conjunction with the USA Division III Women’s All-Star team (July 21 and 22). Before departing Sau Paulo, the teams will conduct a ‘Skills Clinic for the Youth of Jundiai’ on July 23.
The last part of the tour takes part in Rio de Janeiro. The men will play their first game there on July 24 before taking the court for their final competition on July 26.
In addition to its competition schedule, the team will also have a chance to experience educational, cultural and social aspects of Brazilian life through city, school and sports club visits.
While in Rio, the team will be staying on the famous Copacabana Beach and touring the Christ the Redeemer Statue and Sugar Loaf Mountain, two of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. In addition, the team will have the chance to visit sites and venues that will be hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The opening ceremonies take place on August 5.
