Cherokee Man Charged for Alleged Involvement in Bicyclist’s Death

A Cherokee man has been arrested for allegedly being involved in a hit-and-run accident late last year that resulted in the death of a bicyclist.

According to online court documents, 29-year-old Casey Herwig is charged with knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Herwig reportedly hit the bicyclist with his pickup on December 26th of last year. The bicyclist is identified as Phillip Watterson of Cherokee. A call was received by authorities around 8:30 that evening regarding a bicyclist laying in the roadway at the intersection of North 6th Street and West Willow in Cherokee. An investigation revealed that damage found on the front of the pickup matched parts that were found at the accident scene.

According to documents, Herwig told officers that he knew he hit something with his truck, but wasn’t sure what it was. Herwig was asked by officers if it was possible that he hit a person, and he reportedly said that it “could’ve been.”
