Alli Fey drained five 3-pointers and scored a team high 20 points helping Nevada to the 3A state championship as the Cubs beat Pocahontas Area 58-54 Saturday evening in Des Moines.
The post player tandem of Kati Cassabaum and Lexy Koudelka combined to score 31 points on 12 of 19 shooting with Koudelka also collecting 11 rebounds and the Cubs out-rebounded the Indians 28-21 for the game.
The Cubs went on a 5-0 run over the last 2:07 of the first half but Poky still led 32-20. Nevada took the lead for good at 35-34 early in the third and at the end of the period they led 46-41. They would own a ten point lead with a minute to play and the Indians were unable to battle back.
Elle Ruffridge scored a game high 33 points on 11 of 23 from the field and was named the captain of the all tourney team, she finished the tournament with 86 points. Faith Meyer was also named to the all tourney team, she scored 36 points in the three games.
Nevada won the game despite 26 turnovers. The Indians had 19 of their own.
Nevada, playing in their first state tourney in 47 years, finishes the year with a 24-3 record. Pocahontas Area concludes the year 25-2 and graduates three seniors, Brooke Runneberg, Rose Meyer, and Jordyn Radig.
