Mustangs are 1A queens of the court

After losing in the championship game the last two years in heartbreaking fashion and five title games in all, the Newell-Fonda girls basketball team finally won the title defeating Springville 45-43 Friday night in Des Moines.

Hailey Falline scored a layup with 1.2 seconds left in the game and the Mustangs would then hold off the Orioles chance at a desperation shot and the celebration was on.  The game was close the whole way with the Mustangs leading 23-22 at the half, each teams biggest lead was five points.

Jordan Wilken made her only shot of the game with 40 seconds left to put the Mustangs on top 43-42, Springville freshman Madi Wagaman would make 1 of 2 free throws with 12 seconds left to tie the game at 43.  The Mustangs called time out and Falline delivered the game winner.

Erin Gerke scored a game high 17 points, Falline finished with 10.  The Mustangs out-rebounded the Orioles by 14 for the game and forced 22 turnovers.  Springville was led in scoring by Rylee Menster with 10.

Both teams finish the year with a record of 23-4.  Gerke and Briana Wells were both named to the all tourney team.  Gerke led the 1A field in points scored with 48, also grabbed 26 rebounds and had eight assists.  Wells scored 45 points in three games.
