Elle Ruffridge scored a game high 32 points and the Pocahontas Area girls basketball team beat Crestwood 58-43 in a semi-final game played Thursday. The Indians will now play Nevada for the championship Saturday at 4pm.
Ruffridge, a 44-percent shooter from three point range, missed her first nine long distance shots, but made her last three including a bomb at the buzzer to finish the 3rd quarter. Pocahontas Area led at the half 34-29, Shannon Pizney would convert a three point play to give the Cadets a 35-34 lead with 4:01 left in the 3rd quarter. That was when Ruffridge got hot from outside and Poky would go on a 24-3 over the next ten minutes of the game to secure their spot in the title game.
Ruffridge finished 13 of 26 from the floor and also dished out five assists and had four rebounds. Faith Meyer chipped in with ten points. The Cadets were led by Madison Sickles 17 points and they close the year with a record of 22-3.
Let’s not forget about the Indians defense as they forced 21 turnovers for the game.
Poky (25-1) will now play a Nevada team (23-3) that upset #1 ranked Mediapolis 52-45 in the other semi-final game. This is the first ever state championship game for Pocahontas Area girls basketball.
