Big 2nd half lifts Mustang girls to semi-finals

The Newell-Fonda girls basketball team scored 43 second half points and rolled over Colo-Nesco 70-42 in the opening  round of the class 1A state tournament.  Briana Wells scored 19 of her game high 21 points in the second half to lead three Mustangs in double figures.

Newell-Fonda held a 12 rebound advantage for the game, including 17 offensive rebounds, they made 27 of 37 free throws and held Colo-Nesco to 28 percent shooting for the game.

Erin Gerke scored 13 points had a team high ten rebounds and dished out four assists.  Hailey Falline added 13 points and nine rebounds.  Colo-Nesco was led by Shayla Dean who scored 17 points, the Royals finish the year 23-2.

The Mustangs never trailed in the game leading 13-5 at the end of the first quarter and built a 22-10 lead midway through the 2nd quarter.  The Royals went on a 7-0 run in the final 90 seconds of the 2nd quarter to pull within 26-23 but the Mustangs ended up leading 27-23 at the half and never looked back.

The Mustangs, now 21-4, will play Burlington-Notre Dame in the semi-final round Wednesday night at 8:30pm.  The Nikes improved to 24-1 with an opening round 78-60 win over Central Lyon outscoring them 29-11 in the 4th quarter.

The game will be a rematch of last years state title game that Burlington-Notre Dame won 57-54.

Newell-Fonda is playing in their 11th state tournament, they are now 13-10 all time in state tournament games and have finished runner up five times.
