NF Falls Short in District Final

Graettinger Terril Ruthven Ayrshire ended on a 9-0 run as they defeated Newell Fonda 53-48 in a 1A boys basketball district final Thursday night in Emmetsburg.

There were eight lead changes and four ties in the 1st half, which ended tied at 27-27.  GT-RA scored first in the 3rd quarter, but the Mustangs then went up 31-29, and did not trail again until the final minute plus of the game.  A Mason Scheidegger bucket with four seconds left in the 3rd quarter made it 38-33, but the Titan’s Andy Geelan’s long three-point shot in the front court was released just before the buzzer, bounced high off iron, and went in to make it a two point game.  Newell Fonda took a 48-44 lead on an Adam Mullen basket during the latter portion of the 4th before the Titans run to finish the game.

Mason Scheidegger had 11 points to lead the Mustangs, followed by Brady Dicks and Mullen each with 10.  The Mustangs seniors include Dicks, Mullen, and Zach Hecht.  Newell Fonda’s season ends at 14-10.  GT-RA (19-4) will play South O’Brien in a substate game Saturday night in Spencer.
