March madness arrived early in Manson last night as Newell-Fonda and GT-RA advanced in the 1A boys district tournament with stunning buzzer beater wins.
Conner Wolterman made a jumper from the right elbow at the buzzer giving the Mustangs a 44-42 win over Algona-Garrigan. The Mustang guard took a pass from Adam Mullen with 3.2 seconds left and dribbled into the front court for the game winner. Mullen finished a with a team high 14 points.
Newell-Fonda led by 13 points in the third quarter only to find themselves down 42-39 with 2:45 to go. Mullen made 1 of 2 free throws and a layup to tie the game at 42-42 with a minute to go. Garrigan had the ball with 3o seconds left and called a timeout with 5.4 left and would then turn the ball over after the timeout setting up Wolterman’s heroics.
The Mutangs are now 14-9 and will face GT-RA Thursday night at Emmetsburg in a 1A district final at 7pm. The game will be broadcast on 92.9FM KKIA.
GT-RA advanced with a 73-71 overtime win against Manson Northwest Webster. Andy Geelan scored a game high 32 points including a three foot shot in the lane as time expired, he also forced the OT with a three pointer with three seconds left in regulation.
The Titans are now 18-4 heading into their showdown with the Mustangs.
