Youngberg Buzzer-Beater Lifts Poky in Double OT

Tanner Youngberg’s game-winning runner in the lane at the buzzer gave Pocahontas Area a 50-48 win in two overtimes over Fort Dodge St. Edmond in a 2A boys basketball district final Tuesday night in Fort Dodge.

There were nine lead changes and six ties in the 1st half.  The game was tied at 10-10 after the 1st quarter, and St. Ed went up 28-23 at the half, and led by as many as 7 during the 3rd quarter.  The Indians fought back to get within 36-34 after the 3rd.  Poky tied the game 40-40 late in the 4th quarter on a Youngberg layup coming off of a steal he made at mid-court, and that was the score at the end of regulation.  St Ed’s Robert Flattery made a pair of free throws in the final minute of the 1st OT to tie the game at 45-45.  Youngberg hit a 3 to start the scoring in the 2nd overtime.  St Ed soon countered with a 3 of their own, setting the stage for Youngberg’s heroics.

Youngberg finished with 24 points, and hit three 3’s.  Austin Roetman had a pair of 3’s and had 10.  The win was the Indians second over the Gaels this season, ending their year at 10-12.  Pocahontas Area is now 18-5, and will play Forest City in a 2A substate game on Saturday night in Algona at 7pm.  The game will be broadcast on Mix 101.7FM.
