St. Mary’s Girls Hang Tough Before Falling at MMC

The Storm Lake St. Mary’s girls basketball team battled, but Marcus Meridan Cleghorn pulled away late in a 65-48 win in a 1A Regional opener in Marcus.  St. Mary’s only lead was 4-3.  MMC built their biggest 1st half lead at 22-13 early in the 2nd quarter.  The Panthers got a close as one twice the remainder of the 2nd quarter, but the Eagles got their lead to 30-26 at the half.  MMC pushed the advantage to double-figures during the 3rd quarter and led 46-36 going to the 4th, and St. Mary’s only got as close as nine.  The Panthers were led by MacKenzie Laven with 12, followed by Katie Lenhart’s 11.  Trisha Lenhart and Riley Lenhart each had 8.  Riley and Annie Flynn are the two St. Mary’s seniors.  The Eagles connected on 11 threes, including five from Ashley Hurd, who had a game-high 18 points.  13th-ranked MMC is now 18-4 and will host another postseason game next Tuesday.  St. Mary’s season ends at 4-18.
