Facebook Helps Police ID Suspect

Some help from Facebook assisted Storm Lake police in identifying a suspect in a theft from Wal-Mart.

Saturday, police received a report of theft, including the security video, which was posted on the department’s Facebook page. Police received a series of tips from Facebook followers as well as the Sac City Police Department, identifying the suspect as 19-year-old Grant Mandernach of Sac City.

Monday, Mandernach’s residence and a vehicle were searched, with stolen property seized. Tuesday afternoon, Mandernach surrendered at the Buena Vista County Jail. He was charged with fifth-degree theft and removal of a theft device, both simple misdemeanors. He was jailed on a 600-dollar bond.

Assistant Police Chief Todd Erskine said once again the department has been assisted by Facebook followers in the solving of another crime. The Storm Lake Police Department was assisted in the investigation by the Sac City Police Department.
