8/17/12 County Dog Ordinance Discussed

An ordinance covering vicious dogs could be considered by the Buena Vista County Supervisors.
Recently, the Supervisors received a complaint from a local resident who was chased by a dog while bicycling on C-65.  County attorney Dave Patton this week told the Supervisors under Iowa code, unless the county has an ordinance covering vicious dogs, the sheriff can shoot the animal.  Patton notes cities normally have ordinance covering dogs running at large, and about one-third of the counties in the state also have such ordinances.  He says he has a proposed ordinance covering dogs.
Supervisor chair Rhonda Ringgenberg questioned who would enforce such an ordinance and who would pickup problem or stray dogs.  Supervisor Dale Arends said state code says if dogs are seen as posing a threat to livestock, the sheriff can be called and the dog shot.  He says the sheriff’s office has contacted the owner of the dog who threatened the bicyclist.
