A Storm Lake Elementary School teacher was the grand prize winner of a National Teacher Appreciation Month contest sponsored by a curriculum provider.

          Fourth-grade teacher Mel Fisher was nominated for the award from Math Solutions by Stacey Cole, the mother of Skylar Cole, a student in her class last year.  Cole’s nomination said Fisher “is a young teacher who is willing to take risks and think outside the box. She challenges her young mathematicians to be problem solvers as opposed to computation magnets. She worked in an extremely diverse school that serves kids with lots of needs, and she throws her heart and soul into making the community a better place for all of them to live. She's student-centered all the while remembering that low expectations will get her students nowhere in life.”
          Fisher won a fun-filled prize pack from Math Solutions along with a library of their publications.
