8/1/12 Dredging Insurance Problem

The Buena Vista County Supervisors are searching for a new insurance carrier for the Storm Lake dredging equipment.
The county pay for the insurance on the dredge equipment… and Supervisor Paul Merten told the Lake Improvement Commission Monday afternoon the current carrier will only cover them through the current dredging season.  He says the insurance company first informed them the cost would go up 30-percent for next year, which followed a 20-percent increase this year.  Then the county was informed the insurance company would cancel coverage after the dredging is completed this year.
Merten said the county is now paying just under 30-thousand dollars annually for the insurance.  He says they were told the company is dropping coverage due to two large claims.  In late May, 2010 a motorboat hit the dredge pipe just below the surface of the water.  The impact caused the motor to flip itself into the boat while still running.  The propeller struck ten-year-old David McFarlin of South Sioux City, who died of his injuries.  In October of 2007, the dredge sank, resulting in considerable and expensive repairs.
